September Hike - Wallace Falls, WA

Did you know Washington is stunning in September? It is as if a lovely blanket of green moss has wrapped itself around the shoulders of trees. A few leaves have begun their annual transition to fall tones and the morning chill hangs on.

I’m in Washington for a while and am adjusting to life in the Pacific Northwest. Despite living in Portland, OR for my first 10 years, much more of my life has been lived in CA. And it shows. I had three different water devices in my car as I embarked for this trail, my normal M.O. when hiking in California heat. My sweaty shirt after some switchbacks on the way up to Wallace Falls made me cold, as opposed to quickly drying in the Los Angeles sun. The absence of incessant heat and sunlight, at this point, is welcomed. I love a dreary sky and rain puddles.

There are so many trees here. Even under the unifying blanket of green, the way the sun filtered through the branches made the landscape look different with every turn. If I could live in a treehouse in these woods, I would.

Documenting light in nature in varying seasons and times of day always reminds me of the wonder that is this earth.
